Framework for nurse managers to evaluate the implementation of a workplace wellness programme
Roets, Lizeth
Background: Management of HIV/AIDS in the healthcare workplace poses a challenge to nurse managers, as many
nurses are affected by HIV. A workplace wellness programme (WWP) is a strategy that enhances organisational health
and wellbeing among nurses infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS. However to remain effective and sustainable,
workplace programmes within the South African context must be evaluated.
Methods: A quantitative descriptive design with questionnaires was utilised. The data gathered, as well as the logic
model, was used to develop a framework to enable nurse managers to evaluate the implementation of a workplace wellness
programme.
Results: Respondents indicated what should be included and evaluated when implementing a WWP to ensure that such a
programme is sustainable. The theory of change logic model was then utilised to develop the framework for evaluation.
Conclusion: Nurses indicated that the management of HIV/AIDS in their workplace must be reconsidered, and the focus
should be on promotional interventions and services to enhance health and wellness. A framework for evaluating the
success and sustainability of a programme was proposed and should be available to enhance the effectiveness of its
implementation.
