The history and growth of Islam in Soweto

The History of Islam has been recorded from the coming of first Muslims in both east and western parts of the country, however, there remains a gap with regards to recoding and exploring how Islam has entered and spread into various townships has been thoroughly recorded. The primary focus of this dissertation is to establish the history and growth of Islam in Soweto, South Africa. The study covers the period from the establishment of Soweto township to the current times. To this end, a short historical review of Islam in South Africa and Soweto is given to provide the pertinent background. To further augment this study, the role played by various Islamic strands such as Tablighi, Sufi, Salafi and Shi’as in the research area is discussed. Based on the review of lieterature on the History of Islam in Soweto and other parts of the country and in-depth interviews. Respondents were identified based on the age and current role they are playing within the muslims in the area and were asked to respond to question about the Islamic History of Soweto.
As part of the conclusion to this dissertation it details the arrival of Islam in Soweto which was brought by the immigrants when the township was established, and it highlights the early Muslims from the locals.
