A survey of the existing sources on the qualificative indicates that the qualificative has yet to be adequately described. The method used in this study is based on a functional theoretical approach. A distinction is made between three types of qualificatives from a functional point of view. The
deictic and non-deictic functioning of the paradigmatic sets of demonstratives are described.
The absolute determinants are discussed with reference to their contrastive and non-constrastive functioning. A distinction is made between different types of functional determinants with regard to the referential relation and qualifying aspect which they generate. The functioning of these different types of determinants are discussed. A model for the functional reconstruction of a series of
qualificatives is also provided. This model is based on the different functional levels of the
qvalificative series. The function and categorical reconstruction of the qualificative series is illustrated to a limited extent.; 'n Oorsig van die bestaande bronne wat oor die kwalifikatiewe handel toon dat die kwalifikatiewe nog nie bevredigend beskryf is nie. Hierdie model is gebaseer op die verskillende fungeringsvlakke wat onderskei word by die funksionele opbou van die kwalifikatiewe reeks. Die fungering en kategoriale opbou van die kwalifikatiewe reeks word in ‘n beperkte mate toegelig.
